1) Brindisi is a principal city in the Puglia region of Italy. Its history goes back
to Roman times when it was called Brundisium. Then and now it is the jumping-off-point
to the Levant (the Eastern Mediterranean). The Roman name derives from the Greek
word for a deer’s head - Brentesion - because the uniquely shaped harbour was likened
to a deer’s head with antlers.
2) Brindisi is also the name of the entire province in the Italian region of Puglia
(Apulia) in which the City lies.
3) Brindisi is a seriously important wine region
- a wine region which is considerably smaller than the province itself. Yet one of
a number of remarkable wine regions in the Salento peninsular of South East Italy.
4) Brindisi is Italian for a toast: fare un brindisi - to drink (literally to make)
a toast. A coincidence in such a famous wine region? The answer to this is left
as a research project for you dear reader. ;)
The main focus of this new web site is the entire province, because that is where
the principal author now lives. Having said that the City (and the Wine ;) ) will
not be ignored. What you’ve stumbled on is a humble beginning, but there is a mass
of material - much of it entirely original - waiting to deploy. So… here over the
next months and years comes Brindisi Province; up-to-date; in native English, and
from the deer’s mouth! This isn’t another me-too website thrown together as an adjunct
to a sales pitch. It’s being produced simply because the author feels like doing
it, and presently has the time to research it, and regularly maintain it.
